Christmas is a great time for giving. But often it seems like a whole lot more wanting than giving. And with the economy still riding out a storm and questionable consumer confidence—perhaps it’s a really good time to reflect on just how much has already been given to us by God and the difference we can make for others by realizing our own enormous blessings. And from a biblical perspective, generosity is never tied to the economy.

There are two things that are true about every human being: 1) We were created for a relationship with God, and 2) We were created for friendships with others. To be in loving relationships is what it means to be created in the image of God—and what it means to be human. In this series we’ll see how those two defining characteristics are connected.

If you’ve ever thought your parents favored one of your siblings then you can relate to the story of Joseph. He was his father’s favorite—and in his early days he milked it for all it’s worth. But Joseph’s overconfidence would catch up with him. And fortunately for him, God used an unusually difficult chain of events to mold him into a man of faith and integrity. He’s not so different than us—and his life has much to teach us.

Who can forget those times tables and flash cards from grade school? You knew you really arrived in the math world when you advanced from addition to multiplication. Did you know the same thing is true of spiritual growth and our mission in life? God’s plan for reaching the world with his great love is based on multiplying and not just adding. He wants to reproduce his character in us—and in turn we reproduce his character in others. It’s what making disciples is all about. It’s what it means to be the church. So brush up on your nine’s tables… we’re going to MULTIPLY!
